Hyundai and Kia agreed to a $62.1 million fund over ZF-TRW airbag control units that could fail from electrical overstress and stop airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from firing in a crash. Owners of recalled vehicles can claim up to $350 in residual cash. Owners of unrecalled vehicles with the same unit can claim up to $150. Everyone can also claim documented expenses.
The claim deadline is April 8, 2027. Proof is required, starting with your VIN. The case is 2:19-ml-02905-JAK-JPR in the Central District of California, and Hyundai and Kia deny the allegations.

How the payout amount is decided
The $350 and $150 figures are ceilings on residual cash, paid from what remains in $62.1 million after fees, costs, and expense claims. If claims run high, those amounts fall. Expense reimbursement for towing, rental cars, childcare during repairs, repair bills, and lost wages tied to the defect or recall is paid on receipts. The settlement also adds a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty on replacement control units installed under the recall.
Which vehicles qualify
- You owned or leased the vehicle as of April 14, 2025, including former owners.
- Hyundai: certain 2011 to 2023 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid, 2018 to 2023 Kona, 2022 to 2023 Kona N, and 2019 to 2021 Veloster.
- Kia: certain 2010 to 2013 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011 to 2020 Optima and Optima Hybrid, and 2011 to 2012 and 2014 Sedona.

When money arrives
The facts available do not list a final approval date. Payments follow court approval and any appeals, and since the claim window runs to April 8, 2027, residual cash cannot be calculated before then.
