What to do if you missed a settlement deadline

A missed claim deadline usually means no payment from that settlement. Administrators state it plainly, the Google Play COPPA site says late claims will not be accepted, and the court order behind the deadline leaves no discretion. Before you write it off, check three things, because each one has rescued a claim.
Then look at what is open now. New settlements post every week, and the one you missed is rarely the only one you qualify for.
Check the postmark rule
Nearly every settlement accepts a mailed claim postmarked on or before the deadline, even if the online form has closed. If the deadline was yesterday and you can get a paper form in the mail today with today's postmark, you have missed it. If the deadline is today and the post office is open, print the PDF form from the official site and mail it. The Penn Medicine and FitOn settlements both publish a paper form and a PO box for this reason.
Check for an extension
Deadlines move more often than people expect. The poultry wages settlement extended its participation period to August 31, 2026 after the first payments had already gone out on May 15, 2026. Extensions appear on the official administrator site, usually on the home page, and third-party pages lag behind. Open the official site and read the current date before assuming the old one holds.
Check whether you needed to file at all
Some settlements pay automatically. The Guitar Center wage and hour settlement in California enrolls every class member and pays by workweeks with no claim form. Data breach settlements often provide credit monitoring to everyone whether they file or not; Labcorp AMCA and Equifax both do. If your case is one of these, the deadline that passed was for opting out or objecting, and your payment or benefit is still coming.
What does not work
- Emailing the administrator to ask for an exception. The deadline is in a court order, and the administrator cannot waive it.
- Filing under a different name or address. That is a fraudulent claim and it is signed under penalty of perjury.
- Paying a third party who promises to get a late claim accepted. Filing is free everywhere, and nobody has a back door.
Move to the next open case

To avoid missing the next one, set a reminder for the deadline minus a week, or use an app that tracks open cases and files for you. Payout is one option and it is free; the official administrator sites and the class action news sites are others. The method matters less than having one.
